Orientation

Accommodation

You may be sleeping our spare room in the house, or in a tent in the summer, or in your own campervan.

Beds

New sheets and pillow cases for your bed are in the linen cupboard in the hallway. Towels are also there. Please make your bed when you arrive to suit you.  When you leave, please strip off the sheets and pillow cases and put them in the washing machine.

How long can I stay?

Usually you can stay as long as you like. Sometimes we have other people booked in that we need the room for.  Sometimes, we need the room for an AirBnB guest, so then we may ask you to move into the tent.

Language

Gareth and Kazel are both trained ESOL teachers and can help you improve your English. Join us for conversations in the evenings and please only speak English in the house when we are around.

No Smoking

There is no smoking on the property please.  We prefer not to host wwoofers who smoke, even if you smoke elsewhere –  we can smell it on your clothes.

Rubbish

We recycle, but not everything can be recycled.
Only plastic bottles with numbers 1 or 2 can be recycled, not toothpaste tubes, or chip packets or any other kind of plastic packaging including tetra-paks.
In winter put paper and cardboard by the fireplace. In summer put them on the front deck. Cardboard goes into a box for recycling
Glass, tin, aluminium, plastic and paper have wheelie bins on the deck.
Rubbish goes under the sink, and then in bags on the deck.
Any food scraps go in the chicken bin.

Toilet paper

Toilet paper is is kept in the cupboard in the laundry. Recycle the cardboard roll.

Washing your clothes

We use laundry balls so we don’t need to add powder.

Power on – check the plug and switch and power button.  Use the ‘Jeans’ wash – it is a fast, effective cold water wash.  Adjust the water level setting, and start.

Dry your clothes on the line in the sunshine, or under the car port when the weather is wet.

Take your dishes to the kitchen, put your scraps in the scrap bin and rinse your dishes and stack them directly into the dishwasher. Please help with washing dishes, or drying and putting them away.  If it goes in the drawers it can go in the dishwasher.  We generally hand-wash plastic containers and pots.

Dishwasher: Plates to the right, big to the back. Bowls on the left. Start from the inside with bowls, the outside with plates.
The grater goes on top of the microwave.

Tea towels are in the narrow cupboard beside the oven. When you have finished using a tea towel, put it in the wash.

Showering

Please turn the fan on when showering, and leave it on for half an hour after. Make sure the shower curtain is in the bath when you are showering so water doesn’t puddle on the floor.

Computers and Music

Ask for the Wifi password. Find somewhere quiet if you skype late at night, and use headphones. Please try to avoid too much screen time in the dining room/lounge.  We have a guitar and piano that you are more than welcome to use.

Hours

We expect 4 hours of work per day. You can choose to work longer hours and save up for a day off.
Avoid the morning school rush by having breakfast after 8 in the morning.  You can choose whether to work in the morning or afternoon.  Please try to adjust to our times by getting up before 9am and having dinner with us around 6pm.

What should I do tomorrow?

Talk to us about what jobs need to be done and we’ll decide together based on our priorities and your interests and skills. We can give you small daily tasks and a bigger project. Please let us know if you have skills in a trade so we can utilize that. ALL of the jobs are important.

Tools and machinery

Please make sure you get detailed instructions on how to use any of the equipment, especially the chainsaws and mowers before using them. Gareth likes to be sure that you are absolutely safe. If you have never used a chainsaw before, this is not the place to learn.

You may not use any machinery if you are alone.

Please clean and return all tools to their proper place at the end of each work day.

Before you leave

Write a message for us in the WWOOF book the night before you leave.

In the morning before you go, strip your bed and put the sheets and pillowcases in the wash. Clean out any rubbish from the room.  Vacuum your room.
